Anniversary gift lists connect years of marriage with materials: paper for the first, wood for the fifth, silver for the twenty-fifth. Treat the theme as a starting point. The useful question is what your partner would enjoy, rather than what an anniversary list says you should spend.
Anniversary themes at a glance
This chart follows every theme on Hallmark’s anniversary list, which covers years 1 to 20 and then every fifth year to 60. Other lists differ in places.

| 6 | Candy or iron | A favorite sweet with the story of when you discovered it |
| 7 | Wool or copper | A warm scarf for a walk you both want to take |

| 13 | Lace | A framed detail from a wedding outfit, with permission |
| 14 | Gold jewelry | A piece chosen together, rather than a surprise about taste |
| 15 | Crystal | Two crystal glasses for a toast you repeat on the date each year |
| 16 | Wax or silverware | Candles for a meal, with a note about the occasion |
| 17 | Furniture | Restore a chair with a shared history instead of replacing it |

| 19 | Bronze | A bronze bookmark or bottle opener engraved with your wedding date |
| 20 | China | A meal served on a meaningful plate |
| 25 | Silver | A piece chosen together, with its story written down |
| 30 | Pearls | A photograph or letter alongside a gift, if pearls suit them |
| 35 | Coral | Use the color in a card or photograph; you do not need actual coral |
| 40 | Ruby | A bottle of red from a region you visited together, opened over that trip’s photos |
| 45 | Sapphire | A blue detail in a gift linked to a favorite place |
| 50 | Gold | A family collection of memories from the marriage |
| 55 | Emerald | A green frame around a meaningful photograph |
| 60 | Diamond | A celebration planned around the couple’s wishes |
You can use a color or a small detail without buying the literal material. Check preferences, allergies and care needs before giving jewelry, flowers, food or plants.
The 10th anniversary
Tin or aluminum is the traditional 10th anniversary gift, and Hallmark lists diamond jewelry as the modern alternative (Hallmark). Ten years is also a good point to look back across the whole marriage, so many of these ideas combine the metal with a decade of memories.
- Ten notes in a tin. Buy a small tin box and write one note for each year: where you lived, one thing that happened and one thing you’d like to remember. This works even on a day’s notice.
- A photo printed on aluminum. Photo printers sell these as metal prints. Choose one photo from your wedding or honeymoon, or a grid of ten photos, one from each year.
- An engraved aluminum luggage tag with your wedding date, given with plans for a trip.
- A tin lantern for the garden or porch, for evenings outside together.
- A cake or cookie tin filled with a recipe that has been part of your years together, baked for the day.
- Diamond jewelry, if you’re going modern. Small studs or a simple band. Choose together if you’re not sure of their taste.
- A trip back. Return to where you got married or honeymooned, or finally take the trip you postponed.
For a reflective evening alongside the gift, our anniversary questions include questions about what you’ve learned and what you’d like next.
Give the object a memory
A frame becomes more personal when its caption explains something outside the photograph: the wrong turn before you arrived, the borrowed coat, the person who took the picture. A note can explain why a place or object belongs to your relationship.
Keep the detail specific. “This is the walk where we decided to move” gives the recipient something to recognize. A general statement about a perfect marriage can be less useful, especially after a difficult year.
For a first anniversary, the paper gift guide has letters, maps and small books you can make without waiting for a delivery.
Choose a scale that fits
| Your situation | A sensible choice |
|---|---|
| The date is tomorrow | Finish a short letter or choose a local gift |
| You want time together | Plan an activity and explain why it matters |
| You are celebrating parents | Ask which memories they want shared |
| You have a tight budget | Make one carefully captioned page |
| You want a book printed | Confirm the printer’s schedule before promising a date |
Do not turn a gift into homework. Asking relatives for stories can be lovely, but give them a clear choice and do the organizing yourself.
Make a record you can revisit
Alongside the gift, answer one question each: “What do we want to remember from this year?” Keep both accounts, even when they differ. Add the date and leave room for next year’s answers. The one-page anniversary record turns this into a page you fill in each year.
